Some books are slim but speak volumes. Sometimes, a slim book catches attention and becomes a bestseller. Other times, it's up to individual readers to discover their own gems. I found Bad Beat to be a gem.A gem isn't always fully cut and polished, but it's still a gem.
I enjoyed the variety of characters; each seemed real to me, and I wanted to find out what would happen next in their lives. I admire the author's ability to create so many engaging stories and weave them together in under a hundred pages. The book isn't science fiction or a fairy tale of happily ever after. Yet, through the story runs a thread of hopes and dreams and disappointments and hard times that most people can easily relate to.
I just finished reading Bad Beat, but I'm certain I'll continue thinking about it. And I'll be smiling when I think of the story itself and when I think of how the story conveys how much any one of us has in common with other people and how much each of us is a separate person, with a life not exactly like any other life.
For anyone who finds casinos and poker tables an unlikely setting for an uplifting story, I think you'll be happily surprised.
